Itron's Smart Meter Earns First Interoperable Device Interface Specifications Certification
Use of open standards and publically available specifications make interoperability a reality
ISSY-LES-MOULINEAUX, France—September 27, 2011—Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI) announced today that it is the first company to earn the IDIS (Interoperable Device Interface Specifications) certification for its electricity smart meter. Following rigorous conformance testing performed by KEMA, an external and accredited laboratory, Itron's smart meter met the strict performance requirements set out by the IDIS association.
Such specifications are important because interoperability between system components is key in all smart metering projects, as its absence often results in the need for new specifications and additional testing to integrate and operate new system components, which can be costly and time-consuming.
The IDIS association develops, maintains and promotes publicly available technical specifications based on open standards, as well as supports the specification implementation in interoperable products. The certification of Itron's smart meter ensures its full interoperability with other smart metering system components that are compliant with the IDIS specifications. This specification and certification is the beginning of a truly interoperable environment, allowing utilities to invest in smart metering with confidence.
