Itron to Provide Meter Data Collection Technology in Algeria to Support Transmission Network
ALGER, Algeria—September 2, 2011—Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI) announced today that it has been chosen by the Société Algérienne de Gestion du Réseau de Transport de l'Electricité (GRTE) to provide Algeria with an advanced data collection system for commercial and industrial (C&I) meters. Consistent with Algeria's approach of utilizing best-in-class technology, the Itron system will contribute to managing the country's advanced electricity transmission network more effectively. The implementation of the system will be completed by the end of this year.
Algeria's electricity meter assets are spread out over 2.3 million square kilometers. Initially, Itron will upgrade a small population of C&I meters with communication modules and implement its automated collection system. The solution includes complete back-up and redundancy features.
In addition to the remote data collection capabilities, the new system will allow remote access to the meters and GRTE to identify and highlight technical losses on the electricity transmission network.
Pierre Ndongo, Itron manager for electricity in Africa, said, "At Itron, we're dedicated to leveraging our in-depth industry knowledge and experience to help countries upgrade their infrastructures, services and systems. With our quality turnkey solution, Itron is proud to partner with GRTE on this effort and to share our insights with other organizations in this area of the world."
