Transportation electrification

10 million EVs were sold in 2022 worldwide—and sales are increasing by nearly 50% each year. Is your grid ready?

The challenge Can the grid cope with millions of EVs?

EVs bring with them the promise of cleaner energy and reduced emissions. But they also present you with a unique set of hurdles to overcome:

Increased demand for electricity: Transportation electrification will significantly increase the demand for electricity. This will strain a power grid that is already aging and in need of upgrades.

Peak demand:  EVs are typically charged during peak hours, when demand for electricity is high. Unmanaged, this can overload transformers and lead to power outages.

Need for grid flexibility: EVs can be used to help provide grid flexibility: EVs can be charged during off-peak hours and then used to provide power to the grid during peak hours. However, this requires managed charging and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI).

All of this presents a need for grid modernization, with two alternatives: Either build out new infrastructure, which will be costly and take a tremendous amount of time to implement—or maximize existing assets through careful, intelligent grid edge management.
